SIGNIS Media Training

SIGNIS is a non-profit organization which aim to alert the importance of human communication in every culture, and encouraging them to speak out in media sector. It was formed in November 2001 by the merger of International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audiovisual (OCIC) and International Catholic Association for Radio and Television (Unda) and now has the representation from over 100 countries.

In collaboration with St. Xavier’s College, Kathmandu, SIGNIS conducted training in Nepal Jesuit Social Institute from 27 October- 2 November 2019. With the motto of “Caring for our common Home”, video making training was started. There were altogether 16 participants from Nepal and 4 facilitator from different countries who are directly involved with SIGNIS. The activities included preparing script, shooting in various location in Kathmandu, editing and lastly making video out of it. On the last day, all the groups presented videos that they made in front of other esteemed guest. NJSI gave farewell to this wonderful team who worked so hard to showcase the present situation of Nepal via their skills of video making.

Continuity to Eco-club

Eco club has been giving young students from different schools a platform to serve their community by protecting and maintaining a healthy environment and also developing themselves as mindful youths. After establishing eco-club in Path Pradarshak School located in Badikhel, Godavari with the students, this year NJSI planned to visit this school for a follow up. The team went to the school to get an idea on student’s activities throughout the year.

On November 5, 2019 the follow up was conducted to check the continuity, activities, improvement & maintenance of the eco-club formed in their school. Essay competition was organized in which the winner got prize. The group activities and games attracted the interest of the students. The students were very interactive with the team. The teachers claimed that the students were actively participating and hard working.

Inauguration of Jaladevi Women Center

Jaladevi Swastha Aama Samuha of Baiteshwor-7, Dolakha got a new constructed activity center for conducting their regular meetings. The old space were completely destroyed by earthquake was not suitable to even sit and talk. They were facing too many difficulties as they could not conduct more programs for their community. Somehow they were managing to organize medical camp in their locality and other programs related to reducing social issues. The women of this group is much empowered for doing something for our country and community.

They got relieved when the newly constructed women center keys were handed over to them. The inauguration ceremony of the center which is funded by Xavier Network was on October 5, 2019. Altogether 44 people actively participated in the celebration. Fr. Arul inaugurated the center and handed the keys to the concerned authority. They were happy to receive the center and asked for the support in future days.

Inauguration of Shree Khsyamadevi Women Center

The regular support is provided by Nepal Jesuit Social Institute to women of rural areas of highly affected district from major earthquake 2015. To make them overcome of the problem raised by earthquake, NJSI is building safe space for women which is also known as Women center or multipurpose activity center for women.  

On 29th September 2019, the grand inauguration took place at Shree Kshyamadevi Women center, Barahbise Rural Municipality-4, Okhreni, Sindhupalchowk. The group comprises of 38 members and was established in 2058 B.S. The space they made to make decision for development was destroyed by earthquake therefore they requested for a new one. In the inauguration ceremony a total of 32 people were present.

The construction of women hall was funded by Missio Achen and implemented by Nepal Jesuit Social Institute. Fr. Thomas inaugurated the newly built women center and handed over to the concerned authorities.

Reducing Challenging Behavior among Children with Neurodevelopment Disorder

Parents and Caretakers of Kalidevi Hostel and Sustha Manisthiti Purnasthapana Kendra gathered together for Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy which was conducted on 26th and 27th of September 2019 at Bhagwati Activity Center for special children.  Nepal Jesuit Social Institute has been working for the welfare and development of the children with special needs in various manner and conducts regular training program.

The implementation of another ABA therapy was guided by special trainer, senior psychologist Mrs. Rama Karki. On 26th September the training was for caretakers in which 6 were present. On the next day parents training program was organized in which 19 parents of special children participated. Both the training was to reduce and minimize challenging behavior among children with neurodevelopment disorder and child safe guarding policy.

The participants were engaged in the training throughout. They confessed that it is easy to understand the children behavior with the knowledge provided by these training.

Sustainable Support for Uplifting Livelihood- Tailoring and Soap Production Training

Since 2015 earthquake, NJSI has been addressing the unheard voices of people from earthquake affected regions of the country. The working sectors includes livelihood projects which help women enhance their quality of life, skills and knowledge by providing vocational trainings like soap making and tailoring.

On September 4, 2019 NJSI team went for soap making training at Majuwa Swabalamban Women’s Group, Haibung Sindhupalchowk. There were altogether 26 participants. They showed their keen interests in learning the each steps through their active participation. The next day on September 5,  tailoring course started at the same place for the same beneficiaries in which a total of 15 women are continuously learning to stich garments.

On 17 October, the team conducted soap making training at Kalidevi Krishi Sanstha Samuha, Suri Dolakha. The training was provided to 18 direct beneficiaries. The day after, on 18 September advance tailoring course started for those 14 women who already got basic tailoring training. This is a three month course in which women acquire knowledge of stitching garments like gown, daura suruwal etc.

The activities like this will help them to identify their skills, strengths and knowledge that already exist and seek to build. The beneficiaries were thankful to Nepal Jesuit Social Institute for the continuous support and wishes for more in near future.
